Brian "Chunk" Kelly is the maintenance manager and nursery technician and Bryan Frasier is an algologist and nursery technician at OceansAlaska. OceansAlaska is a Ketchikan based nonprofit dedicated to developing aquaculture and mariculture as viable industries for Southeast Alaska. The organization makes available commercial quantities of oyster, geoduck, sea cucumber, and kelp larvae or "seed." Currently, there is no fully functioning oyster hatchery in Alaska. Alaskan oyster farmers raise oysters from seed that comes from hatcheries in Hawaii. At OceansAlaska's barge Brian and Bryan conduct research to establish an Alaska shellfish hatchery system, using algae grown at the facility to feed their oysters. When the kelp and oysters reach maturity, they are moved to regional kelp and oysters farms.
